Recipients of the Monett Freshman of the Year Award are selected for their strong work ethic, positive attitude, musicianship, dependability, and willingness to embrace the challenges of high school band. Whether in rehearsals, performances, or daily interactions with their peers, these students exemplify the values of the Monett Band Program and serve as role models for fellow freshmen.
In keeping with a beloved Monett Band tradition, the recipient must also complete the ceremonial "Freshman Victory Lap" by running around the band room carrying THE Sousaphone bell over their left shoulder. While the origins of this time-honored ritual have been lost to history, it serves as a symbolic initiation into the long line of Freshman of the Year recipients who have proudly carried the tradition forward for decades.
This award celebrates not only musical achievement but also the character, enthusiasm, and potential that recipients bring to the program. As one of the band's most enduring traditions, the Monett Freshman of the Year Award recognizes students whose contributions help ensure the continued success and legacy of the Monett Band Program—while reminding us that some traditions are simply too important, and too entertaining, to retire.
